The cover of Joy Division's 1979 debut album Unknown Pleasures is instantly recognized and remains as an icon of music's future, seemingly a fitting metaphor for Rancho Estates or any Cliff May community. The stacking of the lines perfectly describes how the homes are nestled and oriented in the development, building on each other into a neighorhood.
The original album art features a white-on-black data graph depicting 80 wiggly lines, representing a signal from a pulsar in space. The image was originally published in 1970 by Harold Craft, a postgraduate student, in his PhD thesis titled "Radio observations of the pulse profiles and dispersion measures of twelve pulsars". It was a black-on-white science plot.
